Tips & Advice

This is the biggest day out of the year for Kiwis living in London and a bit of preparation will go a long way towards making sure you have a wicked time.

BYO Booze

The pubs will be packed and getting a drink will be nearly impossible. Even getting in to most of the pubs will be tricky. But there's still plenty of fun to be had outside and the action will spill out onto the sidewalks. So bring a backpack full of beers, some warm clothes and enjoy the atmosphere in the streets. It'll end up being a cheaper day out this way and you'll have roadies for when you're on the tube. Or even better than roadies, pick up The Beer Belly so you can still pop into the pubs unnoticed.

Dress Up

Costumes go over well as do flags, face paint and inflatable sheep. Be creative and you'll have plenty of people asking for photo ops. Or just chuck on an All Blacks hersey and you'll look the part. This site has cheap rugby shirts.

If You See a Toilet - Go!

The toilets inside the pubs will be chockers so if you can duck into a Maccas or wherever... do it! But be discreet. Might be a bit difficult if you're dressed as a sheep though.

Stick to the Circle Line

Unless you want to be booed by your fellow Kiwis - stay off the District Line! At some stations the District Line and Circle Line trains run on the same track. It might be tempting to hop on the District but don't! It's against the rules and you'll get a chorus of boos for it.

No Holding

You'll get the same chorus of boos if you sit down or hang on while you're on the tube. No hands!

Treat Regular Tube Customers With Respect

One of the best things about this day is how courteous everyone is. There will plenty of bewildered people with you on the tube - tourists, grannies getting their shopping etc. Let them on and off the tube first and try to give them a bit of space. They will probably be very scared.

Get to Westminster Early

If you want any hope of seeing the Haka, get to Westminster well before the 4pm start to get a good spot up front.

Get to the Temple Walkie Early

If your plan is to finish off your day at the Temple Walkie, make sure not to stick around after the Haka at Westminster for too long. Most people will have the same idea and there will be a huge crowd heading to the Walkie. It's probably quicker to walk there rather than taking the tube. Cheating yes, but most people tend to finish the crawl here.
